here's something that really made me mad. Last night I got home from work a little later than normal. Before going to bed I decided to drink a beer and sit out on my porch for a few minutes. I may have been outside for 5 minutes. I heard a vehicle coming down the road in front of my place but only the yellow marker lights were on. Well needless to say a spotlight shined on down beside my garage and POP!!! then I heard the easily recognized sound of a deer hitting the ground and a truck speeding off. I didn't do anything at this point I was going to wait the game out and have a word with these folks when they returned for their prize. Well I waited for over an hour and they hadn't returned, I walked out this morning to see what was there and found a buck fawn that was shot at the base of his neck. Now this is what makes me mad, If these folks are so desperate that they need to resort to spotlighting on other peoples land why don't they even come back for the meat. Also I have 2 small children my son and daughter, and there are alot of what ifs that could have happened while shooting that close to someones house. I spoke to DNR this morning as well, I told them about what had happened and they really didn't seem to care. Also I was told that if I picked up the deer for myself I would have to use one of my deer tags from my license. I could not turn it in under landowner since our house only sits on one acre of land. If I did not use this tag I would be in posession of illegally killed game. Now thats a twist huh? Now I will be the poacher for using this animal that someone else illegally killed on my land by illegal means without my permission. Isn't that some BS!!! Any of you have any thoughts on this??

Rob, my thoughts are much the same as yours , but, also, I don't care for the way the DNR blows this incident off. In my state (Iowa) we have a tree farmer whose crop (trees) was being eaten by deer this summer. DNR would not help him, with either catch and release, or harvesting these animals that were destroying his livelyhood. Out of desperation, he took a couple of them. Now he is facing $serious$ penalties for doing so. What other choices did he have? Hopefully, next time, you will be fortunate enough to get a description of the truck and plate number. Armed with that, I don't think the DNR could turn their backs on it.

Ron, the tree farmer is about to begin his trial for taking the 2 deer out of season. I don't believe him and the DNR will ever see eye to eye on compensation for his crop losses.

Yeah, I have a lot of ideas about that kind of BS. Every single member of this forum and other forums like it should originate an official petition, go to the trouble to send it member to member, where each member could sign and have it notarized before sending it to the next member, and then we would have something official to present to the proper authorities. An easier way would be for the administrators of this forum to provide the proper address for each of us to present a notarized letter, and we could draw up a sample letter for some input from all members, and then present each individual, notarized letter to our elected reps and/or the Wildlife officials. If we sit on our collective butts and just complain, and not actually do anything, we can't complain when these characters get away with that kind of stuff. They need to be found out and given a little lesson in proper conduct. Get me some details together, and I'll be glad to draw up the sample letter, and other members can make suggestions to add to or take away from what I write. That story pisses me off to the nth degree!

Hey ROB what state you from sounds like michigan to me because when we report a poarcher that what we get, so from now on we do what we have to ,to teach the skum that breaks the law and do a low down thing like shooting a deer under a light . We need a DNR for the law biding sportsmen and women but they just turn their heads and look the other way. KEEP ON THEM

I can't belive there was not more of an investigation in the matter. Here in Montana, if you call 1-800-tipmont ( a phone # to turn in poachers) and tell them what you witnessed, they would send a FWP rep to the location and take a statement on what was observed. They also would not request that you place your own tag on a deer that you didn't harvest. What they do with the deer I'm not 100% sure. Maybey donate it to needy families.

A more recent story of West Virginia DNR. The property I hunt has always had a decent deer population, The problem is the neighbor does not like the deer as they eat his valuable hay.(which some years he harvests just once or doesn't harvest at all). This past season while hunting our land I heard many more shots than the amount of folks that were hunting the neighboring property. Within the 2 week buck season I noticed that his white pick up truck was going up and down the mountain after each shot. One evening he stopped me on my way home since I pass the driveway into his property to ask if I had gotten any good bucks....Which I hadn't. He had his 6 year old son with him who proceeded to tell us that they had got a whole bunch of deer and there must have been 20 of them. At this point the "Neighbor" gave his son a pretty dirty look and suddenly had no interest in whether or not we had taken any decent deer or not. The thing that annoys me the most is that the DNR when called had no interest in coming to see if there was any violation to the law. It was also obvious about 2 weeks later that the deer were not used for all of there meat when the "Neighbor's" rottweiler decided to drag 2 carcasses of deer onto our property and all that was missing was the hams and backstraps from 1 and just the hams from the other. The only good thing about this is that we have shot 4 coyotes crossing our property and heading into the neighbor's field where most of the shooting took place.
